Sheet music to tablature

I’ve played music for about fifteen years, mostly teaching myself, but I never really learned to read sheet music. That was fine until I watched a friend perform with a volunteer community orchestra and decided I wanted to join.

I knew they were going to put written parts in front of me, so I went looking for a tool that could turn them into something I could actually learn from. I couldn’t find what I needed, so I built it.

Keeping the written part

Replacing the whole score with tab would lose too much. I still needed the written rhythms, repeats, dynamics, and other directions. The converter keeps the original page and adds an aligned fret-number guide underneath it.

How it works

The paired-file workflow takes the sheet-music PDF and matching MusicXML. The PDF supplies the original appearance; the MusicXML supplies the notes, durations, measures, and navigation instructions. The app lets me review that information before generating a bass or guitar guide.

I spent several weeks testing and changing the output against the music I was learning. The gallery shows a public Schubert sample going through the real application, including the exported score. PDF-only recognition is still experimental and requires Audiveris.

Playing with the orchestra

I used the converter to learn the show and played electric bass with CFCArts at Steinmetz Hall. Two other musicians I knew had similar hesitations about notation, and I’ve since helped them get involved too.

Watch the performance on YouTube. If you squint and look toward the bottom right, you’ll find me.
